EV charging
A faster charger or more than one vehicle can materially increase household demand. Charger rating, charging schedule, solar, battery and load-management options are reviewed before three phase is assumed.

Electrical Capacity Planning
Three-phase power divides electrical load across three active conductors rather than one. It can provide suitable capacity for equipment that would place too much demand on an existing single-phase arrangement, but it is not automatically required for every EV charger, air conditioner, pool or workshop.

01 / When You Need This
The equipment name alone does not determine the supply. We assess simultaneous demand and the existing installation before recommending an upgrade.
A faster charger or more than one vehicle can materially increase household demand. Charger rating, charging schedule, solar, battery and load-management options are reviewed before three phase is assumed.
Large ducted systems may use three-phase equipment or add substantial single-phase load. The manufacturer specification, starting characteristics and other major appliances inform the supply assessment.
Pumps, heat pumps, spa equipment and outdoor entertaining circuits can operate together during high-use periods. Their combined demand, cable route and environmental protection need to be included.
Welders, compressors, lifts or machinery may require three-phase outlets or create high starting loads. Equipment data and duty cycle are needed so the switchboard and circuit design match real use.
Induction cooking, electric hot water, multiple air conditioners and future EV charging can change a home's demand profile. Planning before walls close and appliances are ordered prevents late redesign.
A secondary dwelling can add another household load to the property connection. Metering, tenancy, subdivision and distributor requirements must be considered rather than treating it as one extra circuit.
02 / What's Involved
The upgrade covers more than replacing the main switch. Capacity must be suitable from the network connection through to each new load.
Existing and proposed loads are documented using equipment information and expected use. Available load-control strategies are considered where they may avoid unnecessary capacity work.
Stewart assesses enclosure space, main switches, protection, phase distribution, earthing and circuit labelling. A board replacement is quoted only where condition or capacity requires it.
Cable size, route and condition between the connection or meter arrangement and switchboard are checked. Customer-side replacement is completed by Stewart where included.
The accredited partner assesses the existing service and completes approved phase additions or service changes on the network side. Availability is subject to the distributor's connection assessment.
Three-phase metering may require retailer and metering-provider coordination. Access, board space and appointment sequencing are identified before the work date.
EV chargers, air conditioning, pool equipment or workshop outlets receive circuits designed for their ratings and installation conditions. Equipment commissioning remains with the relevant supplier where applicable.
03 / The Process
The load decision comes first, followed by applications, installation preparation and an orderly supply changeover.
Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group
We inspect the supply and board, record current equipment and review specifications for planned appliances, chargers, pool plant or machinery.
Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group
The proposed phase arrangement, board work, customer mains and final circuits are documented. Partner and metering allowances are separated from Stewart's scope.
Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner
The partner checks the applicable network process and proposed service work, then supports or lodges the connection application. Approval may impose conditions. The written scope confirms which party prepares and lodges each required application or notification before work is booked.
Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group
We upgrade the switchboard, consumer mains and included circuits to the agreed stage, test the installation and prepare for the coordinated outage.
Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner and metering provider
The partner performs the authorised network-side phase upgrade. Metering work is completed by the responsible provider under the confirmed booking arrangement.
Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group
Final circuits are checked across phases, protective devices and rotation are verified where relevant, labels are completed and customer-side compliance documents are issued.
04 / Safety & Compliance
Stewart's switchboard, consumer-mains and final-circuit work is licensed electrical work completed to applicable NSW requirements and AS/NZS 3000, with a CCEW issued where required.
Network-side service changes are carried out by an appropriately accredited and network-authorised Level 2 partner. Stewart coordinates but does not perform or certify that network-side work.
The distributor must accept the proposed connection arrangement before it is treated as available. Exact capacity and phase requirements are property-specific and should not be inferred from a neighbouring home.
Testing includes the checks relevant to the finished installation and connected three-phase equipment. The written scope identifies the party responsible for each applicable service and metering completion notice.
05 / Local Conditions
Many established homes in Kirrawee, Sutherland, Miranda and Gymea were designed around lower appliance demand. Renovations may have added air conditioning, pools or kitchen loads without a whole-property capacity review.
Coastal homes around Cronulla, Caringbah and Sylvania can combine pool heating, pumps, air conditioning and outdoor facilities. Equipment can operate concurrently, so a realistic demand assessment is more useful than adding nameplate ratings without context.
Duplex, granny-flat and workshop projects across St George may introduce separate occupancy or machinery requirements. Metering, strata and planning questions need to be resolved alongside the electrical design.
See our local pages for Kirrawee, Sutherland, Gymea, Miranda, Caringbah, Cronulla, Sylvania and Taren Point for area-specific information.

07 / Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. Charger speed, vehicle use, existing supply and load management all matter. We assess the whole installation before recommending a supply upgrade.
It is included when the existing board cannot safely or practically support the proposed phases and circuits. The inspection determines whether full replacement or targeted changes are appropriate.
An accredited Level 2 partner completes the authorised network-side service change. Stewart completes the customer-side board, mains and circuit work and coordinates the sequence.
Only if suitable three-phase circuits and outlets are included for that machinery. Changing the supply does not automatically add the final circuit or confirm equipment suitability.
No. Most household circuits remain single phase and are distributed across the available phases. Dedicated three-phase equipment receives a specifically designed circuit.
Pricing is provided after the existing supply, access, approvals and the separate customer-side and network-side scopes have been assessed. The final quote depends on the board, mains, service, metering, access and equipment circuits required at that property.
