Storm-damaged electrical service assessed from a safe distance before accredited partner network-side repair

    Urgent Network-Side Coordination

Emergency Level 2 Electrical Work in Sydney, Sutherland Shire & St George

A fallen service line, damaged point of attachment, fire-affected meter area or impact to supply equipment can involve both the electricity network and the customer installation. The immediate priority is distance and hazard reporting, not approaching the equipment to decide who owns it.

01 / When You Need This

Situations that call for a coordinated assessment.

These situations can cross ownership boundaries. Describe what you can see from a safe distance and follow distributor instructions.

    01

    Fallen or low service line

A line across the ground, fence, vehicle or path may be live. Stay at least eight metres away, prevent access and call the network emergency line before contacting other trades.

    02

    Storm or tree damage

Branches can damage both the service and the building attachment. Do not trim vegetation near the line or inspect from a ladder. The network must address immediate hazards first.

    03

Sparking or burning near supply equipment

Smoke, arcing or fire near the meter, board or service requires emergency action. Call 000 for fire or immediate danger and do not touch metalwork or attempt to operate damaged equipment.

    04

    Vehicle impact

Impact to a private pole, building attachment or service enclosure can destabilise conductors and supports. Keep the area clear even if the damage appears mechanical rather than electrical.

    05

    Flood or water exposure

Water around a board, meter or service entry can make normally safe surfaces hazardous. Do not enter flooded areas to switch power off; seek emergency and network advice from a safe location.

    06

    Defect requiring urgent isolation

A severe service defect may require supply isolation until repairs are complete. The scope and reconnection conditions are established with the distributor and accredited partner.

    02 / What's Involved

The equipment, preparation and work within the scope.

Emergency work is divided into hazard control, customer-side make-safe work and permanent network-side repair.

    01

    Network hazard report

The distributor controls hazards involving its network and can dispatch crews or provide directions. Their emergency line is the first call for fallen or damaged network conductors.

    02

    Safe customer triage

From a safe location, tell us what happened, whether there is fire, water or structural damage, and what the network has advised. Do not approach equipment to obtain a photo.

    03

    Customer-side assessment

Once access is declared safe, Stewart can inspect the board, consumer mains and affected circuits, isolate hazards and define repairs within the customer installation.

    04

    Accredited partner response

The partner completes service-line, attachment or connection work within its accreditation and network authorisation, subject to safe access and availability.

    05

    Temporary or permanent repair

A make-safe action may not be the final repair. Structural damage, replacement materials, approvals or insurer decisions can require a planned second stage.

    06

    Testing before reconnection

Both network-side and customer-side scopes must be ready. Water, fire or impact damage can require broader testing before the supply is safely restored.

    03 / The Process

A clear handover between Stewart and the accredited partner.

No booking promise overrides emergency services or network control of an active hazard.

    01

    Responsibility: Customer and emergency services

    Keep clear and report danger

Stay at least eight metres from fallen lines, keep others away, call 000 for life-threatening danger and report network hazards to Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy.

    02

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Provide remote triage

We ask what occurred, what the distributor has advised and whether customer-side equipment is affected. We do not ask you to touch or approach damaged electrical equipment.

    03

    Responsibility: Network distributor

    Control the immediate network hazard

The distributor determines the immediate response for its assets, isolation and public safety. Private work proceeds only when access and boundaries are safe.

    04

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Assess customer-side damage

When safe, we inspect the installation, isolate affected circuits and scope board, consumer-mains or internal repairs. Insurance documentation can be prepared from observations.

    05

    Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner

    Complete authorised service repairs

The partner repairs or replaces network-side service equipment within its authorisation. Availability of an appropriately accredited partner is confirmed when the urgent work is assessed.

    06

Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group and accredited partner

    Test and coordinate reconnection

Each party tests its scope and completes relevant records. Reconnection occurs only after the customer installation and network service are both considered ready.

    04 / Safety & Compliance

Licensed customer-side work and accredited network-side work.

Network-side emergency service work is completed by an appropriately accredited and authorised Level 2 partner or the distributor. Stewart does not perform that accredited work.

Stewart completes licensed make-safe and repair work within the customer installation under applicable NSW requirements and AS/NZS 3000, with CCEW documentation where required.

Ausgrid advises keeping at least eight metres from fallen lines and calling 13 13 88. Endeavour Energy advises the same clearance and calling 131 003. Call 000 where life is at risk.

A supply must not be re-energised until required testing and repairs are complete. The partner and distributor determine the applicable emergency notification and completion sequence for the specific incident.

    05 / Local Conditions

Sutherland Shire and St George properties need site-specific planning.

Summer storms and established trees can affect overhead services across the Sutherland Shire and St George. A branch strike may damage a connection without causing an immediate outage, so displaced lines still need to be treated as hazardous.

Coastal wind and salt exposure around Cronulla, Caringbah and Taren Point can contribute to deterioration of external brackets and enclosures. Building damage and electrical damage should be assessed separately by the appropriate trades.

Dense streets, shared driveways and apartment access in St George can complicate exclusion zones and repair access. Follow police, fire or distributor instructions and do not allow residents through a controlled area.

For urgent customer-side faults such as repeated circuit tripping or burning smells without a network hazard, see our Emergency Electrician Sutherland Shire page. Local area pages include Kirrawee, Sutherland, Gymea, Miranda, Caringbah, Cronulla, Sylvania and Taren Point.

    07 / Frequently Asked Questions

Emergency Level 2 electrical work questions, answered.

Who do I call first for a fallen line?

Call 000 if life is at risk. Otherwise, keep at least eight metres away and call the relevant network emergency line: Ausgrid 13 13 88 or Endeavour Energy 131 003.

Does Stewart provide 24-hour Level 2 attendance?

Availability of an appropriately accredited partner is confirmed when the urgent work is assessed. Stewart does not promise after-hours network-side attendance unless partner availability has been confirmed.

Can Stewart repair a network-side service line?

No. Stewart assesses and repairs included customer-side equipment and coordinates an accredited Level 2 partner for network-side service work.

Can I move a fallen line out of a driveway?

No. Stay at least eight metres away and prevent others approaching. Lines can remain live or be re-energised without warning.

What if only my house has lost power?

Check for a broader outage from a safe location and contact the distributor if supply equipment may be involved. A licensed electrician can investigate customer-side faults once there is no network hazard.

Will power be restored the same day?

No restoration time can be guaranteed. It depends on network safety, extent of damage, installation readiness, materials and provider availability.
