Electrical supply isolation planned by Stewart Electrical before accredited partner disconnect and reconnect work

    Planned Supply Isolation

Electrical Disconnect & Reconnect Services in Sydney, Sutherland Shire & St George

Disconnect and reconnect work creates a safe boundary before a building, service route or major electrical installation is altered. The required isolation may be entirely within the customer installation, or it may involve the network service and therefore an accredited Level 2 partner.

01 / When You Need This

Situations that call for a coordinated assessment.

The project program should identify the isolation point early, before demolition equipment or excavation reaches the site.

    01

    Major renovation

Structural work, water exposure, removal of walls or complete rewiring can require more than switching off final circuits. A planned isolation protects trades while retaining only any supply specifically approved for construction.

    02

    Demolition

Before machinery begins, electrical services must be identified and made safe. Permanent supply removal, meter handling and temporary builders' supply are separate decisions that need the owner, builder and relevant providers aligned.

    03

    Meter relocation

Moving a meter board can require the old arrangement to be disconnected, customer mains rerouted and the service reconnected at the approved new position. The meter provider may also have a distinct appointment.

    04

    Pool construction

Excavation near buried services or changes around overhead clearances can require temporary isolation or route alteration. Service locating and electrical planning should occur before excavation dates are fixed.

    05

    Granny flat or subdivision

An additional dwelling may require changed metering, load and supply arrangements. The existing connection is reviewed so new work does not leave an unapproved shared or overloaded arrangement.

    06

    Unsafe or fire-damaged installation

A damaged installation may be isolated until repairs and testing establish that reconnection is safe. Emergency network hazards remain under distributor control before planned repair work proceeds.

    02 / What's Involved

The equipment, preparation and work within the scope.

A disconnect is not complete until the scope for safe reconnection, inspection and documentation is also understood.

    01

    Isolation boundary

We define whether circuits, the main switch, customer mains, metering or the network service need isolation. Each boundary has different authority and notification requirements.

    02

    Temporary power

Builders' supply, retained circuits or generator arrangements are considered where the project needs power during construction. These require their own compliant design and protection rather than an improvised connection.

    03

    Meter and retailer steps

Meter removal, relocation or reconfiguration can involve the retailer or appointed metering provider. Their process is coordinated with the electrical and network-side bookings.

    04

    Customer-side alterations

Stewart completes included board relocation, new circuits, rewiring, earthing and testing so the installation is ready for the reconnection stage.

    05

    Network-side isolation

The accredited Level 2 partner performs service isolation, removal or reconnection tasks within its authorisation and completes the applicable network notifications.

    06

    Readiness for energisation

Before reconnection, exposed work must be complete, mandatory tests passed, access safe and required approvals available. The supply is not restored merely because construction wants power.

    03 / The Process

A clear handover between Stewart and the accredited partner.

The disconnection and reconnection are booked as linked milestones, with clear readiness conditions between them.

    01

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Review plans and identify services

We inspect the board, meter, service route and proposed construction area, then clarify whether the isolation is temporary, staged or permanent.

    02

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

Prepare the scope and shutdown plan

Customer-side work, partner work, metering, temporary supply and builder responsibilities are documented. Critical loads and site access are included in the plan.

    03

    Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner

    Arrange network-side approval and isolation

The partner confirms the distributor's process and completes or supports required applications and notifications before carrying out the authorised service disconnection. The written scope confirms which party prepares and lodges each required application or notification before work is booked.

    04

Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group and builder

    Complete the customer-side project work

Stewart isolates or removes wiring, installs new board and circuits as agreed, and coordinates rough-in and fit-off with construction milestones.

    05

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Test and confirm reconnection readiness

The finished customer installation is inspected and tested. Defects affecting safe energisation are resolved before the partner and metering appointments proceed.

    06

    Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner

    Reconnect the network service

The partner completes the authorised reconnection and service testing. Stewart then confirms operation of the customer-side installation and hands over applicable records.

    04 / Safety & Compliance

Licensed customer-side work and accredited network-side work.

Network-side service disconnection and reconnection must be completed by an appropriately accredited and authorised Level 2 partner. Stewart coordinates this work and does not perform the accredited network-side task.

Stewart completes licensed customer-side isolation, alteration and reconnection work to applicable NSW requirements and AS/NZS 3000. A CCEW is provided where required for the installation work.

Permanent removal, altered supply, new metering and temporary builders' supply can follow different distributor and retailer processes. The written scope identifies the approvals and records required for the particular project and who is responsible for each one.

No trade should assume a cable is safe because a building appears vacant. Isolation should be verified and the agreed disconnection boundary documented before intrusive work begins.

    05 / Local Conditions

Sutherland Shire and St George properties need site-specific planning.

Knockdown-rebuild and duplex projects across St George often need early coordination because street access, neighbouring walls and tight construction sites make later service changes difficult.

Sutherland Shire pool and extension projects can affect overhead clearances or buried routes across side access. Locating services before excavation and checking the intended meter location against final plans reduces rework.

Older homes in Kirrawee, Sutherland, Gymea and Miranda may have several generations of board and meter work. A site inspection establishes what can remain during staged renovation and what must be isolated or replaced.

    07 / Frequently Asked Questions

Electrical disconnect and reconnect questions, answered.

Can Stewart disconnect the network supply?

No. Stewart completes customer-side isolation and electrical work. Network-side service disconnection is completed by an accredited Level 2 partner coordinated for the project.

Does demolition need a permanent disconnection?

Often the existing service must be removed or made safe before demolition, but temporary builders' supply may also be planned. The builder, owner and service providers should confirm the required arrangement.

Can power stay on during a renovation?

Sometimes selected safe circuits can remain available, depending on the construction area and installation condition. The isolation plan must prevent trades contacting live wiring.

Who reconnects power after the work?

Stewart tests and readies the customer installation. The accredited partner reconnects the network service within its scope, with metering work completed by the responsible provider.

Can the meter be moved at the same time?

Yes, if the new position is approved and the customer-side, service and metering scopes are all arranged. Our meter-box relocation guide explains the broader process.

    How quickly can reconnection happen?

It depends on work readiness, approvals and provider bookings. Reconnection timing depends on readiness, approvals and provider bookings, and is confirmed for the individual project. A provisional date should not replace final readiness checks.
