Private power pole site being assessed by Stewart Electrical Group before accredited partner connection work

    Private Electrical Infrastructure

Private Power Pole Installation in Sydney, Sutherland Shire & St George

A private power pole can carry supply across a property where the home, meter position or outbuilding sits away from the street connection. Unlike a distributor-owned street pole, a private pole and the lines beyond the network connection point are generally the property owner's responsibility. Its condition, position and attached equipment therefore need to be considered as part of the property's electrical infrastructure.

01 / When You Need This

Situations that call for a coordinated assessment.

Pole work should be based on an inspection rather than appearance alone. These are common reasons to arrange one.

    01

    Deterioration at ground level

Timber decay, termite activity, rust, cracking or movement near the footing can reduce confidence in the pole. Do not strike, drill or climb it to investigate. We document visible condition and arrange the appropriate structural or electrical next step.

    02

A pole has begun to lean

A changing lean, movement in wet soil or tension from attached conductors warrants assessment. The cause can involve the pole, footing, stay, line tension or surrounding ground, so replacing a single fitting without reviewing the whole arrangement is not enough.

    03

A new home or secondary dwelling

Long setbacks, battle-axe access and multiple buildings can make a private pole part of the proposed supply route. Load, metering position, easements, vehicle access and future maintenance should be resolved before the building program relies on the connection.

    04

    Storm or tree damage

Branches can damage the pole, insulators, brackets and overhead conductors even when supply remains on. Keep clear of low or displaced lines, report an immediate network hazard and arrange an inspection after the area has been made safe.

    05

    Changed electrical demand

EV charging, workshops, pools, ducted air or an additional dwelling may lead to a supply review. A pole is not automatically replaced for extra load, but the existing service arrangement and conductor capacity need to be included in the assessment.

    06

    Renovation changes the route

A garage, upper floor, widened driveway or landscape plan can conflict with the current pole or span. Relocation requires a compliant new position and an orderly transfer, not simply moving the pole independently of the approved service arrangement.

    02 / What's Involved

The equipment, preparation and work within the scope.

The finished installation combines physical support, electrical equipment, access and formal network requirements.

    01

    Pole selection and position

Material, dimensions, footing and location must suit the design and applicable requirements. Vehicle impact, gates, excavation, trees, drainage, boundaries and future access are considered before a position is confirmed.

    02

    Overhead spans and clearances

The route between connection points must maintain required clearances from roofs, pools, driveways, vegetation and accessible areas. Exact requirements depend on the network and site, so they are confirmed for the proposed arrangement.

    03

    Underground property mains

Some pole installations transition to underground cable on the property. Conduit, trench depth, bends, draw access, warning measures and entry to the meter or switchboard are planned with other services and finished surfaces in mind.

    04

    Pole-top service equipment

Insulators, brackets, protection and terminations at the pole must match the approved service. Network-side pole-top tasks are carried out by the accredited Level 2 partner, not Stewart.

    05

    Customer-side supply equipment

Stewart completes included consumer mains, switchboard preparation, earthing and final circuits on the installation side. Existing defects or insufficient capacity are identified before the pole change is booked.

    06

    Removal and making good

The quote states whether old pole removal, disposal, excavation, backfilling, concrete, landscaping or surface restoration is included. Existing lines are not removed until the replacement arrangement is approved and ready.

    03 / The Process

A clear handover between Stewart and the accredited partner.

A replacement and a new installation follow different approval paths, but both need a documented division of responsibility.

    01

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Inspect and identify ownership

We inspect the pole, supply route, meter and switchboard, then establish which assets are private and which belong to the distributor. Photos, plans and available defect notices are reviewed before a scope is proposed.

    02

    Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group

    Plan the property-side arrangement

We assess loads, cable route, switchboard work, trenching, access and coordination with builders or arborists. A proposed sequence is prepared so temporary and final supply needs are understood.

    03

    Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner

    Confirm service design and approvals

The partner reviews the network-side connection, required authorisation class and distributor process. Applications or notifications are prepared for the approved pole and service method. The written scope confirms which party prepares and lodges each required application or notification before work is booked.

    04

Responsibility: Civil contractor and Stewart Electrical Group

Prepare the site and customer side

Excavation, footing or conduit work is completed as included, while Stewart prepares customer-side mains, earthing and switchboard equipment. Inspection points remain accessible until approved stages are complete.

    05

    Responsibility: Accredited Level 2 partner

Install or transfer the network-side service

At the coordinated attendance, the partner completes the authorised pole-top and service-connection work, transfers or isolates the existing supply as required, and performs its network tests.

    06

Responsibility: Stewart Electrical Group and accredited partner

    Complete testing and handover

Stewart tests and documents customer-side work, while the partner completes applicable service notifications. Pole ownership, maintenance responsibilities and any outstanding surface restoration are explained at handover.

    04 / Safety & Compliance

Licensed customer-side work and accredited network-side work.

Private poles and overhead property lines must be maintained safely by the owner within the applicable ownership boundary. Their installation must follow the NSW Service and Installation Rules, distributor requirements and relevant electrical and structural requirements.

Only an appropriately accredited and network-authorised Level 2 partner completes network-side service and pole-top work. Stewart does not represent itself as holding that accreditation and does not perform that portion.

Stewart completes included customer-side fixed wiring as licensed electrical work and provides a CCEW where required. The accepted scope identifies any pole or civil completion records and the party responsible for providing them.

Never climb, brace, cut or excavate around a suspect pole without professional advice. If conductors are fallen, sparking or within reach, stay at least eight metres away and call the network emergency number, or 000 where life is at risk.

    05 / Local Conditions

Sutherland Shire and St George properties need site-specific planning.

Battle-axe blocks and sloping sites in parts of Kirrawee, Gymea Bay and Sutherland can require a long private route from the street. Equipment access, retaining walls and shared driveways should be checked before a pole position is assumed from a plan.

Coastal conditions around Cronulla, Caringbah and Taren Point can accelerate corrosion of exposed metal fittings. Timber condition also varies with drainage, vegetation and termite history, making direct inspection more useful than relying on pole age alone.

Established St George lots may contain shared access, narrow side setbacks and older service arrangements altered during duplex or granny-flat development. Ownership boundaries and any easement or strata requirements need to be understood before replacement work is priced.

    07 / Frequently Asked Questions

Private power pole installation questions, answered.

Is the pole owned by the electricity network?

Not always. A pole inside the property that carries supply beyond the network connection point may be privately owned. We confirm the likely boundary and involve the distributor or accredited partner where formal confirmation is needed.

Can Stewart install the network connection on the pole?

No. Stewart manages the assessment, customer-side work and coordination. Network-side connection and relevant pole-top tasks are completed by an accredited Level 2 partner.

Should a leaning pole be replaced immediately?

Keep away if lines are low, damaged or unstable and report any immediate hazard. Otherwise, arrange an assessment promptly. The required action depends on the pole, footing, conductors and network boundary.

Can a pole be relocated away from a driveway?

Potentially, but the new position must satisfy clearances, span, access and network requirements. A relocation is planned as a new service arrangement rather than moving the pole in isolation.

Who maintains the pole after installation?

The property owner generally maintains privately owned poles and lines. The handover should identify the ownership boundary and any recommended inspection or vegetation responsibilities.

Will the power be off during replacement?

A transfer usually requires isolation. The duration and whether temporary arrangements are practical depend on the existing service and approved sequence. The planned outage depends on the approved transfer method and site readiness; the expected window is confirmed when the work is scheduled.
