    Private Power Poles

Who owns the power pole on my property?

It depends on where the pole sits in relation to the network connection point. Poles that carry the street network belong to the electricity distributor. A pole on your land that carries only your own supply, after the connection point, is usually a private pole, and the property owner is responsible for its condition and maintenance.

Many owners assume every pole belongs to the electricity company. On larger or set-back properties, that is often not the case.

This page explains the difference and what it means for maintenance.

    01 / Detail

    Network poles

Poles that carry lines along the street, or supply more than one property, are generally network assets owned and maintained by the distributor.

    02 / Detail

    Private poles

Where the supply runs from the network connection to another pole on your property before reaching the house, that second pole is usually private. The owner is responsible for keeping it in safe condition.

    03 / Detail

    Why it matters

Private poles age like any timber or steel structure. Rot, termites, leaning and damaged fittings can create hazards.

    04 / Detail

    Replacing a private pole

Replacing a private pole or changing the supply to it involves network-side work. Stewart Electrical Group coordinates this work, and network-side tasks are carried out by our accredited Level 2 partners.
