01 / When Relocation Is Needed

Common Reasons To Move A Meter Box.

Most relocations are driven by a change to the property, not the metering equipment itself. The most frequent scenarios we see across Sydney homes:

    01

    Renovations And Extensions

Knock-down rebuilds, second-storey additions or facade changes often leave the existing meter box in the wrong location or buried inside new works.

    02

    Driveway Or Carport Changes

New driveways, carports and garages frequently encroach on the existing supply point, requiring the meter box to be moved for safe clearance.

    03

    Switchboard Or Service Upgrades

Upgrading from single-phase to three-phase, or replacing an old fuse board, is the right moment to relocate a meter box that no longer suits the home.

    04

    Compliance And Safety

Boxes located behind fences, inside garages or in inaccessible positions often fail to meet current Service and Installation Rules and must be relocated.

    02 / Regulations

    Ausgrid And Endeavour Energy Requirements.

Which distributor governs the job depends on the suburb. Sydney is split primarily between Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy, and each has its own application process, accreditation requirements and inspection regime.

    Ausgrid (Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter)

    • 01Work performed under Ausgrid's NS 116, NS 117 and the NSW Service and Installation Rules.
    • 02Network-side relocation work is carried out by an appropriately accredited Level 2 partner coordinated for the project.
    • 03A Connection Application is lodged for any change to the metering position or consumer mains.
    • 04Metering changes are coordinated with Ausgrid and the appointed Metering Coordinator.

Endeavour Energy (Southern, Western, South-Western Sydney)

    • 01Work performed under Endeavour Energy's Service and Installation Rules and connection standards.
    • 02Network-side relocation work is carried out by a partner holding the accreditation and network authorisation required for the approved scope.
    • 03A Contestable or Non-Contestable connection application is required prior to works.
    • 04All works are inspected and energised in accordance with Endeavour's network procedures.

    03 / Process

How A Meter Box Relocation Is Carried Out.

    01

    Site Assessment

We attend site to inspect the existing meter position, confirm the proposed new location, assess the route for consumer mains and identify whether the supply is overhead or underground. We also review the switchboard condition so any necessary upgrades are flagged before the relocation begins.

    02

    Network Application

We lodge the Connection Application with Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy, including the new metering position, load details and any service or pillar work required.

    03

    Disconnection And Relocation

On the scheduled day we arrange the supply disconnection, relocate the meter box, install new consumer mains where required and reterminate at the new position.

    04

    Reconnection And Certification

Power is reconnected, the metering equipment is reinstated, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) and Notification of Service Works (NOSW) are issued.

    04 / Frequently Asked

Moving An Electric Meter Box, FAQ.

How much does it cost to move an electric meter box in Sydney?

Every relocation is different. The final cost depends on the distance between the old and new position, the length of new consumer mains required, whether the supply is overhead or underground, and whether the switchboard also needs upgrading. We provide a fixed quote after the on-site assessment and distributor review.

Who is allowed to relocate a meter box?

Stewart Electrical Group assesses and completes the included customer-side electrical and switchboard work. Network-side connection work is carried out by an accredited Level 2 partner coordinated for the project.

How long does a meter box relocation take?

The on-site and application program depends on the approved route, customer-side work, metering and partner availability. We confirm the expected program in writing once the approved route, metering requirements and partner availability are known.

Do I need approval from Ausgrid or Endeavour Energy?

Changes can require distributor approval and metering coordination. Stewart manages the customer-side scope and coordinates the accredited Level 2 partner for network-side applications and service work. The written scope states which applications Stewart lodges and which the accredited partner lodges for your job.
