    EV Charger Installation in Miranda

Installing an EV charger properly starts at the switchboard, not at the charger itself. Miranda has a wide mix of dwelling types, from detached houses with driveways and garages to units and townhouses around the Westfield precinct and along the Kingsway, and each brings a different starting point for where the vehicle is parked, where the switchboard sits, and how far the new circuit needs to travel.

01 / Signs You Need This

When to arrange ev charger installation.

Most EV charger enquiries come from a new vehicle purchase, but a few situations mean the assessment matters more than usual.

    01

You are relying on a standard power point

Charging from a general power outlet is slow and puts sustained load on a circuit and accessory not designed for hours of continuous draw. A dedicated circuit is the appropriate long-term solution.

    02

The switchboard is older or already full

If the existing board has little spare capacity or lacks modern safety switch coverage, that needs to be addressed before or alongside adding a new high-draw circuit.

    03

You live in a unit or townhouse

Shared switchboards, allocated parking and common property cable runs mean the installation needs coordination with the body corporate before a charger is fitted.

    04

The charger will run overnight unattended

Overnight charging benefits from correctly rated protection and, where useful, load management so the charger does not compete with other overnight loads such as pool pumps or hot water systems.

    05

You are considering a second EV

Households moving to two electric vehicles should plan circuit capacity and possible load management from the outset rather than adding a second charger as an afterthought.

    06

The cable run is long or difficult

Detached garages, rear driveways or carports set back from the house can mean a longer cable route, which affects cable sizing and the practical cost of the job.

    02 / What's Included

A considered scope, based on the property.

The scope covers everything from the switchboard to the finished charging point, sized to suit your vehicle and how you intend to use it.

    01

    Switchboard and supply assessment

We check available capacity, existing circuit protection and whether the board can safely accommodate the new circuit, or whether an upgrade should happen first.

    02

    Circuit design and cable run

The cable route from the board to the charging point is planned around the property, accounting for distance, protection from damage and any required conduit.

    03

    Charger supply and mounting

The charging unit is fitted at an agreed location, whether wall-mounted in a garage or positioned for a driveway or carport, and wired to its dedicated circuit.

    04

    Circuit protection

The new circuit is fitted with correctly rated protection and safety switch coverage suited to EV charging equipment.

    05

    Load management where appropriate

For homes with limited spare capacity, or with two vehicles to charge, load management equipment can be included to balance demand rather than requiring a full supply upgrade.

    06

    Testing and CCEW

The completed circuit is tested for correct operation and protection, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is issued for the installation.

03 / How the Job Works

From the first conversation to certification.

We confirm the vehicle, the parking arrangement and the switchboard condition before recommending a charger or a cable route.

    01

    Discuss the vehicle and location

Tell us the vehicle, expected charging pattern and where you want the charger positioned, including whether the property is a house, townhouse or unit.

    02

    Assess the switchboard and supply

We inspect the existing board and supply capacity to confirm whether a new circuit can be added directly or whether upgrade work should happen first.

    03

Plan the circuit and confirm scope

The cable route, protection and any load management are set out in a written quote, along with any strata approval that needs to be arranged for unit or townhouse properties.

    04

    Install the circuit and charger

The dedicated circuit is run and terminated, and the charging unit is mounted and connected at the agreed location.

    05

    Test the installation

The circuit and charger are tested for correct operation, protection and earthing before being handed over for use.

    06

    Certify and explain operation

A CCEW is issued for the completed work, and we explain the charger's operation, any app or scheduling features, and ongoing maintenance.

    04 / Safety & Compliance

Electrical work completed properly in NSW.

EV charger circuits are licensed electrical work, tested and documented in line with AS/NZS 3000 and applicable NSW requirements, with a CCEW issued on completion.

Where the assessment identifies that supply capacity needs to change at the network level, that work is coordinated with the distributor or an accredited Level 2 partner rather than treated as part of the standard installation.

    05 / Exclusions & Limitations

What the service does not automatically include.

The installation covers the electrical circuit and charger. A few related items depend on the property and are scoped separately.

    Body corporate or strata approval

For units and townhouses, obtaining approval for the installation and any shared cable route is the owner's responsibility, though we can provide technical detail to support that application.

    Structural work for mounting

If the charger location requires wall reinforcement, conduit through masonry, or other structural preparation, that work is identified and quoted separately.

    Switchboard upgrade

If the assessment finds the existing board cannot safely support the new circuit, upgrading the board is a separate scope agreed before the charger installation proceeds.

Charger hardware selection advice beyond compatibility

We confirm the charger you have chosen is compatible with the electrical installation, but detailed vehicle-specific charging advice sits with the vehicle manufacturer.

    06 / Local Knowledge

Sutherland Shire and St George homes are not all wired alike.

Miranda's residential mix includes established detached homes with driveways and garages spread through streets like those around Kareena Road and the Miranda Fair precinct, alongside a growing number of townhouses and unit developments closer to the shopping and transport hub. Each brings a different starting point for cable runs and switchboard access.

Detached homes with a garage close to the switchboard are usually the most straightforward installation, while properties with a driveway or carport set well back from the house need a longer cable run planned around the existing structure.

Unit and townhouse owners in Miranda should check their strata scheme's position on EV charger installations early, since some buildings are updating shared parking and cable infrastructure for multiple owners at once. For general residential electrical work in the area, our electrician Miranda page has more detail, and our electrician Caringbah and electrician Cronulla pages cover the surrounding suburbs with similar mixed housing.

Coastal proximity is less of a factor for EV charging equipment than it is for exposed switchboards, but outdoor-mounted chargers on carports or driveways still need weather-appropriate enclosures, which we account for in the specification.

    08 / Frequently Asked Questions

    EV charger installation questions, answered.

Can my existing switchboard handle an EV charger?

It depends on the board's age, condition and available capacity. We assess this before recommending a charger, and if the board cannot support the new circuit safely, we discuss upgrade options first.

How long does the installation take?

A straightforward installation with an accessible switchboard and short cable run is usually completed in a day, while longer cable runs or a required switchboard upgrade will take longer.

Do I need strata approval for a unit or townhouse?

Most strata schemes require approval before an EV charger is installed, particularly where the cable run crosses common property. We can provide technical information to support that application.

Can I charge two vehicles from one switchboard?

Sometimes, depending on available capacity. Load management equipment can allow two chargers to share supply without exceeding the board's rating, which we discuss if this applies to your household.

Will the charger work with any electric vehicle?

Most chargers support a range of vehicles, but we confirm compatibility with your specific vehicle before finalising the equipment and installation.

Do I get a certificate for the new circuit?

Yes, a CCEW is issued for the completed circuit and charger installation once testing is finished.

Can the charger be installed outdoors?

Yes, provided a suitably rated enclosure and mounting location are used. We account for weather exposure when specifying outdoor installations.
