    Switchboard Upgrade in Cronulla

A switchboard is the point where every circuit in the house is protected and controlled. In Cronulla, a large share of the housing stock was built from the 1950s through the 1980s, and many of those original boards have since been added to rather than replaced outright. The result is often a board with mismatched circuit breakers, missing safety switches, or a rewireable fuse arrangement that was never designed for the number of appliances a modern household runs.

01 / Signs You Need This

    When to arrange switchboard upgrade.

Some signs point clearly to an ageing board. Others only show up once a licensed electrician opens the enclosure and checks what is behind the cover.

    01

    Rewireable fuses still fitted

Ceramic fuse carriers with fuse wire predate the circuit breakers and safety switches used in current installations. If a fuse is repeatedly rewired rather than replaced with proper protection, the underlying circuit fault is not being addressed.

    02

No safety switches on all circuits

Some older Cronulla homes have a safety switch fitted to only one or two circuits, often added at a single point in time rather than across the whole board. Full RCD coverage is now expected practice.

    03

    The board is physically crowded

Additional circuits crammed into a board that was not designed for them can mean loose connections, poor labelling and no spare capacity for anything new.

    04

Renovation or air conditioning is planned

Reverse-cycle air conditioning, a new kitchen or an added bathroom circuit can push an old board past its safe capacity. This is usually identified during quoting for the other trade's work.

    05

    Visible corrosion near the coast

Salt air affects exposed metalwork and terminals over time, particularly on boards mounted in garages or on external walls close to the water. Corrosion at connection points can increase resistance and heat.

    06

Lights dim when large appliances start

A voltage dip when a pump, oven or air conditioner starts can indicate the supply or board is working harder than it should, though the cause needs to be tested rather than assumed.

    02 / What's Included

A considered scope, based on the property.

We confirm what the property needs before ordering equipment. A single-occupancy cottage and a subdivided duplex are not upgraded the same way.

    01

    Load and circuit assessment

We record every existing circuit, its purpose and its condition, and discuss what you expect the home to run in the next several years so the new board has realistic spare capacity.

    02

    New enclosure and circuit breakers

A correctly sized board is fitted with individually protected final subcircuits, replacing shared or undersized arrangements found in the original installation.

    03

    RCD protection across circuits

Safety switches are fitted in line with current requirements, covering lighting and power circuits rather than a single retrofitted device protecting part of the home.

    04

    Surge protection where appropriate

Where the home has sensitive electronics, appliances or a solar inverter, surge protection can be included in the board design and discussed as part of the quote.

    05

    Labelling and circuit identification

Each circuit is labelled clearly at completion so future work, whether by us or another electrician, does not need to guess what a breaker controls.

    06

    Testing and CCEW

The completed board and every affected circuit are tested before being energised, and a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work is issued for the completed installation.

03 / How the Job Works

From the first conversation to certification.

The board is the one part of the house every circuit depends on, so the changeover is planned to minimise how long the property is without power.

    01

    Assess the existing board

We inspect the current enclosure, wiring condition, meter arrangement and available space, and check whether the incoming supply capacity suits the intended new board.

    02

    Confirm the specification

Board size, breaker allocation, safety switch coverage and any additional circuits are agreed and set out in a written quote before ordering equipment.

    03

    Arrange the supply interruption

A board changeover requires the supply to be isolated. We schedule this at a convenient time and, where distributor coordination is needed, arrange it in advance.

    04

    Install and reconnect

The new board is fitted, existing circuits are transferred, and new protective devices are wired in according to the agreed specification.

    05

    Test every circuit

Each circuit is tested for correct operation, safety switch response and protection before being left connected and in service.

    06

    Certify and hand over

A CCEW is issued for the completed work and the new board is labelled and explained, including which breaker controls which part of the home.

    04 / Safety & Compliance

Electrical work completed properly in NSW.

Switchboard replacement is licensed electrical work. Completed circuits are tested against AS/NZS 3000 and applicable NSW requirements, and a CCEW is issued once work is finished.

Some upgrades require coordination with the network distributor, particularly where the main switch, metering or supply capacity needs to change. Where that applies, we plan the interruption with the property owner in advance. Any network-side work outside our scope is coordinated with an accredited Level 2 partner.

    05 / Exclusions & Limitations

What the service does not automatically include.

A board upgrade addresses protection and capacity at the switchboard. Some related items sit outside that scope unless specifically agreed.

    Meter replacement

Meter equipment is generally owned by the retailer or distributor. If the meter itself needs replacing, that is arranged separately from the switchboard work.

    Downstream cable faults

If testing during the upgrade reveals a fault in the wiring beyond the board, that repair is scoped and quoted as an additional item once identified.

    Solar or battery integration

Where the home has or is adding solar generation, integrating that equipment into the new board is a distinct scope discussed separately from the base upgrade.

    Cosmetic repainting or wall patching

Minor patching around the new enclosure may be needed depending on the old board's footprint. Painting and finish work is not included.

    06 / Local Knowledge

Sutherland Shire and St George homes are not all wired alike.

Cronulla's housing is a mix of older beach cottages close to the esplanade, renovated federation and inter-war homes further back from the water, and a growing number of unit blocks and townhouses near the station and shopping strip. Each type presents a different board location and access arrangement, from a freestanding garage board to a shared meter room in a unit complex.

Salt-laden air is a genuine factor this close to the coast. Boards and meter equipment on exposed external walls or in open carports show corrosion sooner than equivalent installations further inland, which is one reason an upgrade in Cronulla sometimes reveals more deterioration than the visible symptoms suggested.

Renovation activity is common in the area as older cottages are extended or rebuilt, and a switchboard upgrade is frequently identified during that process once a kitchen, ensuite or second storey is added. For homes in the surrounding area, our electrician Cronulla page covers general residential electrical work, and our electrician Miranda and electrician Caringbah pages cover neighbouring suburbs with similar housing stock.

Unit owners in Cronulla should also confirm whether their board sits within the lot or forms part of a shared arrangement, since strata approval or common property boundaries can affect how an upgrade is scoped and booked.

    08 / Frequently Asked Questions

    Switchboard upgrade questions, answered.

Do I need a full switchboard replacement or just new safety switches?

It depends on the board's condition and capacity. Some boards can accept added safety switches without full replacement, while others are too old or too full to modify safely. We assess this before recommending a scope.

How long will the power be off during the upgrade?

The supply needs to be isolated while the board is changed over. We schedule the work to keep the interruption as short as practical and confirm timing with you beforehand.

Will an upgrade let me install an EV charger later?

A correctly specified board can allow for that circuit to be added later, but the charger itself and any required load management are a separate scope quoted when you are ready to install it.

My home is close to the water, does that change the work?

Coastal exposure can accelerate corrosion in board enclosures and terminals, which is factored into the inspection and the recommended enclosure rating.

Is my unit's switchboard my responsibility or the strata's?

This depends on the building's arrangement. We can help identify whether the board is within your lot or shared, but the strata scheme's records are the reliable source for that boundary.

Will I get a certificate for the completed work?

Yes, a CCEW is issued for switchboard replacement and any associated circuit work once testing is complete.

Can the existing circuits stay as they are?

Circuits in good condition are usually retained and reconnected to the new board. Any circuit found to be damaged or unsuitable during testing is identified and discussed before work continues.
