    Preparing for a Rewire

How do I prepare for a house rewire?

Before a rewire, plan where you want power points, lighting and data, clear access to ceilings, walls and the switchboard, and agree a staging plan so you know which rooms will be without power and when. If you are renovating, schedule the rewire before plastering and painting.

A rewire is easier and less disruptive when decisions are made before work starts.

These steps help the job run smoothly.

    01 / Detail

    Plan your layout

Walk through each room and note where you want outlets, switches, lights and fans. Changing the plan mid-job is harder.

    • Bench-height outlets in the kitchen
    • Bedside switching
    • Outdoor power
    • Home office outlets

    02 / Detail

    Clear access

Move furniture from walls and make the roof space and switchboard accessible.

    03 / Detail

    Understand the staging

Many rewires are done room by room. Ask which areas will be without power and plan around it, especially for fridges and home offices.

    Coordinate other trades

Schedule plastering and painting after the rewire, and let your builder know the electrical plan.

    Older homes

Homes built before the late 1980s may contain asbestos materials. Access is planned carefully and specialist advice may be needed.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Related questions, answered.

Can I stay home during a rewire?

Often, yes, with the work staged room by room.

Will there be holes in the walls?

Some access points are usually needed. Patching is typically done by a plasterer.

Should I upgrade the switchboard at the same time?

It is often sensible. We check the board as part of the job.

    What paperwork will I receive?

A CCEW where the work requires one.
